As the second of two winter storms this weekend sweeps in off the Atlantic, an orange warning has been issued for Connacht by Met Eireann.

A yellow warning is in place for Storm Fergus for the rest of the island.

Galway City Council has taken a number of measures in preparation for the height of the storm between 1500 and 2000 hours today ( Sunday).

The council warns of high waves and possible overtopping at exposed areas, including the Salthill Promenade.

Carparks will be closed at Salthill, and sandbags have been put in place in Salthill and the city area.

Storm Fergus closely follows Storm Elin as one of a series of systems given names by several weather services, including Met Eireann and the British Met Office.
