Members of a storied Sussex boat club claim they are being forced out their lakeside home in a bitter dispute with their landlord.

According to Mail Online, members of Weir Wood Sailing Club say their landlord has “cooked up” claims of breaches of their lease to eliminate competition for his own sailing offering.

The club signed a new 50-year lease in 2015 for its clubhouse on the Weir Wood reservoir, near the woods that inspired the Winnie the Pooh stories.

However, its former landlord was bought out in 2021 by Weald Water Enterprises — whose director Alan Catterall subsequently launched his own water sports club.

A spokesperson for the club said: “We cannot allow an individual with the financial resources to bring down the curtain on a sailing club with 50 years of sailing history and thousands of people's quiet enjoyment of the facility.”

But Catterall insists the sailing club was in breach of its lease agreement, meaning the lease could now be forfeited.
