Since the inception of ship building, half hull models have been in existence. When a new vessel was commissioned a timber model of the hull was constructed and whittled into shape, this was cut longitudinally down the middle. One half, usually the port side was cross cut into sections which now became the profiles for the ribs, the other side, starboard, was then mounted on a backboard and presented to the potential new owner.
An early commission for Ger Corwley's company was a model of 'The Brendan' which was presented to Pope John Paul II.
One-off commissioned models are fabricated from timber to exact scale and can be finished in boat colour and livery complete with mast and boom, deck fittings, etc.
In the case of multiple models a master is constructed precisely to scale and required dimension, a silicone mould is produced and models are then cast in resin, hand finished, painted and can be mounted on a timber or painted backboard with or without sail and rig.
In such a form they make excellent event trophies and can have event logo and date on accompanying engraved plaque, resulting in a timeless memento.
A recent commission was for the old Dublin Bay 24s which are currently being restored in France as the Villefranche DB 38 for Villefranche Classic Sailing. The model features realistic deck planking, brass winches and ports and authentic paint finish.
Other recently completed models include a 1:30 scale Outer Limits offshore power boat complete with dedicated trailer, engine bay and cockpit detail, pictured below.
NCB, Galway hookers and pucans, fishing vessels, etc. have been constructed as full hull models suspended on acrylic dowels or mounted on an authentic sea-like surface. Detail such as rigging, winches, hatches, helm and tillers, etc. is meticulously formed from a myriad of materials familiar to the marine miniature craftsman.
Marine Models of Bray would be happy to discuss any yacht model requirements and advise on scale, size and finish.
