As Storm Jocelyn sweeps in over the Atlantic seaboard with very strong south-west to west winds, Galway City Council has closed roads and car parks and warned of dangerous travelling conditions.

Met Éireann is predicting large coastal waves with wave overtopping, very difficult travelling conditions, fallen trees, potential damage to power lines and damage to already weakened structures in a severe weather warning valid from 1700 hours today Tuesday January 23rd, until midnight.

Storm Jocelyn follows quickly on Storm Isha at the weekend.

Galway harbourmaster Capt Brian Sheridan said the Port of Galway recorded wind speeds of 71.3 knots (132.08km) at 1700 hours during Storm Isha on Sunday January 21st.

Galway City Council has once again closed the road from the roundabout at Seapoint along Seapoint Promenade at Salthill as far as Galway Business School until further notice.

It has also closed car parks at Toft park, Salthill, Silverstrand road, and says there will only be local access for Ballyloughane beach road in Renmore.

“Property owners/residents in areas prone to flooding should be prepared with any measures they have available to them,”Galway City Council has said.

• Docks beside the Pedestrian Crossing (St Nicholas Street)

The Civic Amenity Centre at Liosban is closed due to the weather.

Galway’s local coordination group is monitoring updates from Met Éireann, crews are on standby, and it notes that a yellow wind warning is in place for Galway tomorrow.
